What’s it like to be black at MICA?

“Being included in the 6% of black students at MICA feels a bit strange. I went from seeing black students everywhere I looked during high school to barely seeing them at all. It's a huge adjustment. Even though that's the situation, I don't feel any different. I'm not treated differently because of my race. I'm viewed the same as everyone else. I can't say I won't ever encounter an experience where I am treated differently because of my race though. I'm proud that I can walk around campus and not be afraid of being discriminated because of looking different from everyone else and being something I can't change.”
